An Ethereum layer 2 with its own application balances

Base is Coinbase's Ethereum layer-2 network and supports EVM applications. Its ecosystem includes token swaps, collateralized borrowing and vaults. A protocol deployed on Base has network-specific contracts and liquidity: an application name shared with Ethereum does not make its balances interchangeable.

Why Base fees are not just Ethereum gas

Base uses ETH for fees. Its documented transaction cost includes layer-2 execution and a layer-1 data-publication component. Multiplying a displayed execution gas price by gas units therefore does not establish the full transaction fee. The Ethereum estimate on our fee page describes Ethereum execution; it is not a total Base transaction quote.

Interpret Base TVL without double counting

The chain panel tracks capital assigned to Base applications. It is different from a bridge's escrow balance and from a protocol's combined TVL across all deployments. Check whether growth appears in several applications or one large position. A stablecoin deposit and a receipt token reused elsewhere can expose multiple reported balances to the same underlying funds.

Questions to ask about a Base position

  • Check the actual network, token contract and bridge route before comparing balances.
  • Consider sequencer availability and the withdrawal path as well as the destination application's contract risks.
  • For lending, review that market's oracle and liquidation settings; for swaps, examine available pool depth rather than chain TVL.
